Book review

Originally published in the 1930s, this is an English barrister's look at the political trials held in the Soviet Union. "My intention was to write a pamphlet. However, I have found the interest roused in England by the trial of Radek and others so enormous that I decided to give my impressions at greater length. I have added a short description of the rules governing the investigation of crimes and the conduct of a trial in the Soviet Union, since in discussing the trial my experience has been that little is known in this country of Soviet procedure. Some people, indeed, imagine that no procedure exists at all. This is far from being the case: elaborate rules exist, of which I have given merely an outline. I have omitted many qualifications, provisos and exceptions, and the reader who requires further details is referred to the Criminal Procedure Code of the R.S.F.S.R.. This code is in my opinion equal to, and in some respects superior to, the Code of any other country. In describing the trial I have tried to give an impartial and dispassionate account of the proceedings from a juridical point of view. I have avoided so far as possible discussing the political issues involved." Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Hesperides Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. Preliminary Investigation - Trial - A Political Trial - The Indictment - High Treason - Spying - Sabotage - Terrorism - Last Words, Verdict and Sentence - English Opinion - Appendix, Verbatim Report of Radek's Evidence
