Book review

The Royal Collection of drawings and watercolours, comprising around 40,000 items, has been formed over the last five centuries. The first drawings recorded in the collection, in 1547, were the portrait studies by Hans Holbein that are still among the treasures of the Royal Library; and the collection continues to grow, one of the most recent additions being a portrait of Lord Rothschild by David Hockney, presented by the artist in 2003. This book is a survey of the collection, illustrating its many strengths and explaining how it attained its distinctive form.
